I just finished prepping for tonight’s session on The Four Fundamental Concepts of Psychoanalysis. And the fundamental concept awaiting us this evening is . . . wait for it . . . the cotton-reel!
Just kidding — but only somewhat, since it’s by way of the cotton-reel that Lacan introduces the next major psychoanalytic concept in this seminar: repetition.
Pages 60-63 are especially key in this regard — and bookended with another fiery German term, no less, this one straight from Freud: Vorstellungsrepräsentanz.
But it’s not until page 83 that we get a clear outline of the repetitive sequence at stake in Lacan’s account of this German term:
